Description
This was originally posted to my blog, but after reading this thoroughly eloquent and inspiring article on ToonZone [link] , I realized that it needed to reach a wider audience than the 30 people who read the Inherently Satirical World of Jesse J. Barboza.
You all know about what happened to "South Park" - how a group of fanatical Islamic terrorist sympathizers in New York got pissed off at the mere mention of Muhammad in the episode "200" and wished death upon Trey Parker and Matt Stone for daring to lampoon their religion. Trey and Matt, being the wise-ass geniuses that they are, devoted the follow-up episode, "201", to lampooning the whole ordeal, proving that they aren't afraid of some upstart little religious group. And Comedy Central took the coward's way out and censored the bejeezus out of the episode, including bleeping out a minute-long monologue at the end about how important it is to speak one's mind and not to live in fear.
What kind of a world is this that we live in? Free speech and the unrestricted expression of personal beliefs and ideas is thrown out the window in order to kowtow to the threats of a few people on the Internet? That's exactly what terrorists want us to do! That's considered a victory for them! It's a disgusting state of affairs, and standing idly by and hoping that the episode makes it to DVD someday isn't going to do jack shit about it. I urge you, all those who support the freedom of expression, to contact Comedy Central and let 'em know that this is a travesty. Read that article I linked to: it explains everything you need to know, it'll open your eyes to the facts, and it provides all the contact information you'll need.
This isn't about getting an episode of a TV show unbanned. This is about our rights as Americans, and about putting our foot down in a post-9/11 world that's still paralyzed by fear. I say it's time to grow some balls again.
