Welcome To The World Of Tomorrow

One of Son-Void's recent deviations went and jogged my memory, unearthing another one of those obscure underwater scenes from my childhood that ended up being a huge influence on me later. So here's a tribute to it!

My British friends may remember a show on ITV in the '70s called "The Tomorrow People", which from what I've gathered was basically an even lower budget imitation of Doctor Who. What I remember was its limited series revival on Nickelodeon in 1994, about a group of teenagers who discover they have psychic powers and have to keep their abilities secret from the government agents who want to capture and study them. Or something. Honestly, the serialized sci-fi plot was pretty confusing for an easily distracted seven-year-old like myself. The story kinda went in one ear and out the other.

But one thing that stuck with me was the sheer amount of times in the show that the characters wound up underwater. It was a recurring plot point that whenever they were in a jam, some mysterious force would teleport them away to their hidden base, a crashed spaceship on a deserted island. However, every time this happened, they never actually teleported onto the island itself, but directly into the ocean surrounding it, plunging into the depths and then having to swim to shore afterwards. Kind of an inconvenient place to put your spawn point, really.

I'd already started to develop a fascination with underwater scenes at the time, and I really dug this show for how often they happened - but that was pretty much all I watched it for. For years, it was literally the only thing I remembered about it. Well, that, and a random Ren and Stimpy cameo in the first episode.

In my opinion, Netflix or other streaming services should revive/reboot the series since this is the first time I heard of this show.
