Not my damn computer, I can tell you that much!

Here's a happy holiday gift - seems I contracted, yes, another computer virus! This one, according to a Google search, is the HKLM Trojan, which gets in through advertisements (seriously, what's with all these companies putting viruses in their banner ads?) and replaces various commands with copies of itself. And I might be able to live with that, were it not for the fact that one of the commands it's corrupted is the one for my scanner. Which means that until I get this thing fixed, no more artwork. Oh, joy. (And just when I got my creative wind back, too - I inked two commissions the other day and drew a new "Forever 16" drawing last night.)

It apparently doesn't register as a virus, either - my antivirus software has been scanning my computer for almost 24 straight hours and hasn't found any threats (even though it's still scanning the HKLM files, which I can't locate myself and thus am unable to remove). Knowing my luck, I'm going to end up having to pay another $300 to get this fixed professionally. Looks like a slim Christmas for my family this year!

I work for tech support at my college and we use MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D (both available for free from filehippo.com) and they scan for things that anti-virus software doesn't find

I have a feeling they put viruses in their ads on purpose to force people to spend money to get rid of them.

Hm...I'm not sure if other programs can do this, but Paint.NET has the option of scanning the image directly into the program so it can be edited there. If photoshop has something like that, use it.

Ouch. I know your pain; one wrong click on the vast ocean of cyberspace and BAM! I got the dreaded blue screen of death. Being a complete noob when it comes to computers, my only option, and belive me it was the last thing I wanted to do, was to reset my laptop to factory settings, losing my work in the process. Daft thing is, I've got Norton anti-virus, isn't this software supposed to prevent this kind of problem?

Ahh well, hope you fare better than I did :).

Damn, that sucks. I just lost my computer on a field trip, so I'm in kind of a similar jam. I'm currently using my Dad's computer for my homework and uploading, but he's not happy when I spend too much time on computers. It's kinda hard for me to stay away from computers anymore, since everything we do at the Academy of Art requires computers.

Ugh that just sounds terrible. Viruses in ads, what is with that! Do you have Norton Antivirus or something similar? Then again, viruses in ads really don't make sense, at least to me.

Truthfully, I'm getting very paranoid about the internet these days. I'm even getting virus alerts from pages I regular and should be quite safe (DeviantArt included, as well as Destructoid Cinimasacre).

It would boggle my mind why any advertiser would want to break the computers of those viewing their ads.
