One thing I do like about DeviantArt is that being here has opened me up to a lot of things I'd never think of trying otherwise. Like artistic nudity, for one thing. I doubt I would have gotten Photoshop either if it wasn't for this place. And some of the commissions I've taken have really opened up my horizons as an artist.

That being said, I've been inspired again - I want to try my hand at cosplay. I used to think it was just for geeks with too much time on their hands, but recently I've seen a lot of very nice cosplay photos 'round here, and it's made me realize that there's quite a bit of artistic merit behind it. I've also been inspired by my good friend Missi, a.k.a. :iconaumakua23:, whose brilliant work with fashion design and photography has got me thinking about doing some costumes of my own.

I've entertained this thought before, actually. Back when I worked at Burger King, one of my coworkers told me about the cosplay he'd seen at an anime convention he'd been to, and the talk turned to which characters we'd all be if we tried it. I think I'd make a decent Satoshi from "Pokémon" - his Kanto/Jouto-era costume looks like it'd be very easy to make (just a modified short-sleeved jacket, fingerless gloves, and a hat over a regular shirt and jeans), and I wouldn't even have to worry about a wig, since I could just style my naturally jet-black hair.

Thinking about the possible photos I could pose for, I'm becoming more and more interested in actually doing it. What do you think?

Well, I've cosplayed as Ash for the past couple of years, and I have to say that I always have a blast. Part of the fun is having a successful costume, but part of the fun's also being around other fans who can interact with your costume--that is, you can run up to Brock and say hi, or hug a Pikachu, or finally settle the shipping issue and pick a PokeGirl/Guy to pose with ;D. It helps if your personality matches your character, though, because being "in character" helps make your costume that much more interesting.

And for me, cosplaying has always been a lot of fun! And Ash is very easy and inexpensive to make. (Just please, please, PLEASE use a black shirt. I've met a few Classic Ash cosplayers that would use shirts with Pikachu on them or green shirts or whatever and it doesn't look nice. You get extra points if you match the shoes, but please, please use a black shirt.) If you have a friend with a sewing machine, they could probably make you his vest in a few hours (seriously, my friend made me mine in less than a day) and then you won't have to worry about chopping up a jacket.

Anyway, I hope you decide on doing a cosplay~ It makes a con ten times more fun, and of course having the costume available for photographs is very useful. Good luck!

Of course, I say go for it.

Would be interesting if you actually tried to act like Satoshi while taking the pictures.

That's funny, I thought *we* were geeks. o_O

I meant like the uber-geeks, the ones who devote every waking hour to their favorite TV show or whatever. Now I realize that cosplay is a legit form of art that anyone can do, not just reserved for obsessive people.

I've cosplayed at Anime Boston twice. Once as Vegetto from DBZ, and again as Aizen from Bleach.

Read my Comic-Conned story and you kind of get my impression. Nerdy, but fun, maybe. :)

We're debating building an Elcor for Otakon out of Paper-Mache and then sticking a speaker in it hooked to a vocoder, parking it somewhere and having to talk to people.

"Cheerful greetings, Human. I am excited to be here to Otakon. Curiously, we would like to know what character you are cosplaying today."....
