Art block's gone! I hit on an idea for a new series. Remember earlier this year when I thought about doing a time skip for Forever 16, to show what all the characters are up to in college? Well, this is kind of like that, except it focuses exclusively on Abby. She has a huge following among my readers and I personally feel like she's the character who's closest to me, personality-wise - but I haven't really done a whole lot with her, because she keeps getting overshadowed by Joel and Michelle and Aaron and all them. And it's tough for me to write for her at all, because she's got such low self-esteem and she harbors an unrequited crush on Joel that can obviously never go anywhere, so most of her stories are just her moping around feeling sorry for herself. That's kind of a prohibitive premise, and it's not a lot of fun either.
So now I've aged her up from a high school freshman to a college freshman, and I've boosted her self-confidence to the point where she's very proud of her nerdy qualities, instead of trying to hide them. She's pursuing a degree in engineering with a minor in marine biology, marathoning "Doctor Who" and "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" on the weekends, and pursuing her favorite geeky off-beat hobby, underwater fashion photography. She's logged over a hundred hours on "Animal Crossing: New Leaf", she's learning how to sew her own cosplay, and she has every episode of "Welcome to Night Vale" on her iPod. And she can't dance at all, but she doesn't let that stop her from trying. She's what TV Tropes would call "adorkable" - which struck me as the perfect title for the series.
I'm still deciding on the format, though. I don't think I want to do it like a daily newspaper strip like Forever 16 has been, because that's proven to be very time-consuming (and let's face it, that medium is all but dead). I might make this a weekly comic instead. But as I bang out the premise and create new characters, I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on the series' developments
(And in case you're wondering, no, she won't be underwater all
the time. But that tagline seemed like a pretty good jumping-off point for this promo image.)
