The Golden Age of Nicktoons by jbwarner86 The Golden Age of Nicktoons by jbwarner86
Obviously inspired by my recent acquisition of the book "Not Just Cartoons: Nicktoons" by Jerry Beck, I did this tribute to what I consider to be the best era of creator-driven cartoons on Nickelodeon. I may do follow-ups for the Silver and Bronze ages, too.

I figure it's also worth crediting the brilliant minds who created each series...

"Doug" created by Jim Jinkins
"Rugrats" created by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Paul Germain
"The Ren and Stimpy Show" created by John Kricfalusi
"Rocko's Modern Life" created by Joe Murray
"Aaahh! Real Monsters" created by Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo
"Hey Arnold" created by Craig Bartlett
"Kablam!" created by Will McRobb, Robert Mittenthal, and Chris Viscardi
"The Angry Beavers" created by Mitch Schauer
"CatDog" created by Peter Hannan

Ren and Stimpy came out in 1991, and Hey Arnold came out in 1996. KaBlam was made in 1997.

Doug, Rugrats, and Ren and Stimpy all premiered on the same night - August 11, 1991. For the life of me, I can't remember if I watched it, since I was about four at the time, but I was a huge Nickelodeon fan throughout my childhood, so it's possible.

spongebob was made in 1991, that year is not in this list so spongebob is not here, yet the Thornberrys were created before catdog and they appear in the silver age list, a little error i guess
and remember, golden age doesn't mean best age (in my opinion that's the silver age)

Nice art! As for my opinion for each show...
Doug: Probably my second favorite Nicktoon. I loved the theme song, writing, and art style. It was very relatable.
Rugrats: My favorite Nicktoon ever, and one of the first cartoons I've ever watched. Though admittedly, it did go slightly downhill when the original writers left for Disney (To work on Recess), and crashed and burned after the second movie.
The Ren and Stimpy Show: This was the only Nicktoon my parents wouldn't let me watch (At least until I was six). It's hilarious, but the first two seasons are much funnier than the other two and Adult Party Cartoon.
Rocko's Modern Life: Another one of my favorites. It's hilarious, and two of the writers made one of my favorite shows, Phineas and Ferb!
Aaahh! Real Monsters: One of my favorites and the second best show by Klasky-Csupo. Halloweeen in my house doesn't officially begin until we watch "The Switching Hour".
Hey Arnold!: Another great show (Unfortunatly, the movie wasn't that great), and one of the heavier Nicktoons.
KaBlam!: I used to be crazy for this show. After watching it again without the Nostalgia Goggles, it's really not that good anymore. My least favorite Nicktoon of the `90s.
The Angry Beavers: I've always loved this show, but I think I like it even more, now that I get the jokes I missed as a kid (Like Rocko).
CatDog: I think this show gets too much hate! I love CatDog.

Yeah, Paul Germain was one of the show's best writers, along with Craig Bartlett. You can definitely see the Rugrats influence in Recess, as the earlier eps of Rugrats felt like a cross between the Simpsons and Recess, whereas the later eps just felt more like the Simpsons. Still, even the later Rugrats eps were better than the new spongebob series.

Agreed. Plus, you can thank Paul Germain (And other Recess co-creator Joe Ansolabehere) for the "Chocolate pudding" meme. They wrote the episode!

Those guys are creative geniuses. :D. I would love a Rugrats/Recess crossover, too bad that Viacom and Disney wouldn't agree to do that.
