I've been devoting a lot of my Forever 16 efforts lately to fleshing out Michelle's character. I kinda feel like I don't utilize her enough aside from being Joel's girlfriend, so I want to start thinking more about her as an individual character and writing some stories where she's the star. By drawing her bedroom, I can give folks a good sense of the kind of stuff she's into.
It's funny how it is when you've created your own characters. Rather than just assigning them whatever traits and interests you feel like, it's more like they already exist out there somewhere, and you're just trying to stay true to a personality you already know exists but you don't have all the details yet.
EDIT: Case in point. I looked at this one a bit more and decided I could do better. The Wreck-It Ralph poster, while cool, is really more the sort of thing that Kendra would have in her room. But Michelle is a big Harry Potter fan, so she'd probably have at least one poster to show for it. Plus, she has an Xbox 360, so she's probably got at least one Halo game, which prompted me to add another poster to the wall. And the wall itself I recolored to a more soothing peach color instead of the garish yellow it was before. I want the color scheme of Michelle's bedroom to be pleasant and inviting, just like Michelle herself.
Also, would a Wreck-It Ralph poster really exist in the 90's? Sure, the arcade game would, but that's not named after Ralph! That's named after Felix! We can assume, then, that the poster could only have been of the movie, which shouldn't exist in the 90's, because the plot kicks off from Felix celebrating his 30th anniversary of the game.... which wouldn't happen until 2012! Great eye there!
This drawing is set in the present - or rather, the not-too-distant future (January 2013, as evidenced by the calendar on the wall). Forever 16 skips all over the place between 1990 and today. It's just that most of the strips I've done this year are set in the '90s.
