OTDE - Extra #4

This is a more recent one. A few weeks ago, I caught an episode of Ellen where she had Quvenzhané Wallis on to promote that remake of Annie that she’s starring in with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. And I noticed “Hey, she looks a lot like Jasmine from Off the Deep End!” Like, if it were a live action TV show, I could see her playing the character; it’s downright uncanny.

And then last week, I saw a promo spot for Annie on TV, and wouldn’t you know it, Quvenzhané Wallis actually has an underwater scene in this movie. So that inspired me to plunk Jasmine in the pool again, using that scene as a drawing reference – and I included Brenda too, now that I’ve got both their personalities figured out. I’ve mentioned in the past that I love to pair a secure character with an insecure one, and Jasmine and Brenda respectively fill those roles nicely. Jasmine is the tough kid, someone who doesn’t waste time with idiots and will knock you right the f’ down if you tick her off; Brenda is a bundle of nerves, terrified of new situations and always worried about what everyone will think of her. And once again, I tried to convey those contrasting personality types through their body language. Jasmine stares down the camera and strikes a confident pose; Brenda keeps her eyes and nose clamped shut and flails for the surface before Danielle can even press the shutter.
