Even though this draws its influence from "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings", this is specifically a protest piece against the sloppy writing I witnessed in The Beast With a Billion Backs. For those who haven't seen the new "Futurama" movies, be warned, for there are spoilers ahead.

First of all, Bender's Big Score features a rather significant plot thread in the Fry/Leela relationship, one that makes it extremely clear that Fry would do anything in the world for Leela - and not only that, he'd willingly sacrifice everything he has for a chance to prove his love to her. The way the film ends, it looks as if Leela has finally realized just how much Fry cares about her, and that things will finally be different between them. Thirty days later, the events of The Beast With a Billion Backs begin - and we're right back at square one. Leela is single, Fry is dating some crazy polygamist girl, and everyone is totally okay with all of this. Nobody even mentions what went on in the previous film. It's like the first movie never even happened.

Let's take a look at this. Fry has basically done everything for Leela - he's sacrificed his oxygen for her, moved the stars around to spell her a love message in the cosmos, stayed by her bed for weeks in the hopes that she'd awaken from a coma, made a deal with the Robot Devil in order to pen an opera that'll accurately convey his feelings, and even twice given up the chance to relive his life in the 21st century in order to be with her again. And after all this, she still won't return his feelings. Thanks to the writers' inability or unwillingness to stick to this plot thread, Leela has come across like a real jerk, one who pulls Fry's chain for a while only to revert back to her "as a friend" status in the very next episode.

Now, the forthcoming Bender's Game looks like another "let's make a lot of really funny jokes but not advance any storylines" movie, and I don't know if there'll be anything in Into the Wild Green Yonder that ties this storyline up for good. But for my and every other "Futurama" fan's sake, I sure hope so. It'd be extremely disappointing for Mr. David X. Cohen to yank us around for ten years before pulling the rug out from under us completely.

Actually Into the Wild Green Yonder ties into the episode Rebirth and it kinda at least seems cannon that Leela and Fry are at least off square one.

It ticks me off, too. Hell, NIBBLER even said in a way that they wind up together, since he called her "The Other."

I know I'm YEARS late in commenting on this but I have to say:
in the new seasons Fry and Leela are A LOT closer since she said she loved him in ITWGY. I hate the reset button and I also think they push it WAY too often but so far this season, they've only pushed it once and kept their relationship close for quite a while.

waiting for next season to be sure they've kicked the reset habit.

It's so true! So many years I've watched Futurama and it just irritates me that they still never get together. It confuses me why the creators would create a relationship between them in the first place if they're never going to end up together. It's so obviously that those two loves each other, especially how in the early episodes-- "A Flight to Remember", Leela was sort of jealous of Fry and Amy. Fry's actually a very sweet guy, and even though I like Leela, I just want to shake her and say, "Can't you see how much you guys love each other?! End up together already!!" :)

This week's episode, I think they've redeemed themselves...

Remember when Cohen promised that in production season 5/the movies, Fry and Leela would officially start dating? Yeah, the fact that failed big time in delivering that promise makes me feel... like a jilted lover, I guess. If than don't have Fry and Leela make a huge leap in their relationship before this 26-episode season is done, I just can't believe Leela truly loves Fry anymore.

I've learned a lot about relationships thanks to the Scott Pilgrim books, and can wait for the movie.

What did happen between "the devil's hands are idle playthings" and "Bender's Game" involving those two? I even remember Leela's final words are "Wait... I want to see how it ends"... then again the show was revived after all.
