In creating the history for the BarbozaToons, I knew I couldn't call their backstory complete without a lengthy period of bastardization in the 1990s. Here's one such example - the poster for a special edition theatrical Ken Kangaroo cartoon from 1990. You may recall that the Looney Tunes had a number of special edition theatrical cartoons in the 1990s that varied greatly in quality, from the superb ("Carrotblanca", "Chariots of Fur") to the embarassingly bad ("Superior Duck"). That's what inspired this. A brief synopsis:

"When Ken escapes from the zoo, Cleft Rockpile endeavors to round him back up. Ken hides out in the city, disguising himself among the break-dancing homeboys on a street corner. When Cleft catches up with him, the hip-hopping Ken revels in tormenting him by blasting his boom box and pummeling him with his "rad" dance moves."

Sad, really. Note also the exclusive engagement with a particularly crappy-sounding movie called "China Charlie 2" - picture it as one of those cheesy kung-fu action epics starring Hulk Hogan and Tawny Kitaen or something. The name "Layla Sammis" is one of those names I pulled out of the copyright page of one of my textbooks.

There are a few things I've been changing in the BarbozaToon universe recently. Most significantly, I changed the name of their studio from Big O Studios to Gryphon Pictures, which I think fits in a bit better with the majestic-sounding studio names of yesteryear (Paramount, Columbia, Universal, and so on). Plus, I recently found out that "big O" is also a sexual euphemism, so I decided it didn't work as well as I hoped.

In terms of the detrimental period that the BarbozaToons went through in the 1990s, this is just the tip of the iceberg - there were also TV series, advertising tie-ins, and just wait until you see 1995's "The BarbozaToons Movie"...

Just tell me that the Movie had no singing, "radical" baddies, live-action celbrities, or anything resembling that that vet from the Tom and Jerry movie.

You're right about how great "Carrotblanca" and "Chariots of Fur" are. I saw them on Youtube, THEY ARE GENIOUS.

Nice Cuckoo clock, by the way;-)

My hat's off to you sir. You went all out with giving these characters a real history. I wish I had put this much thought into my own Carrot Cake and Avery J. Fox. :)

Hmmm..... so did the Barboza Toons ever spawn a Tiny Toon-like series? :D

Actually, they did! I called it "The BarbozaToon Kids", and I plan on submitting some related artwork pretty soon.
