As I've mentioned before, this story has been in the hopper since 2007. And for a long time, it concluded with Joel rescuing Abby, but then I realized that would literally screw up the entire Forever 16 universe - by having this harebrained scheme actually work, it'd make the reader think that there really is a relationship budding between Joel and Abby, and they'd want Abby to eventually win Joel's heart, thus making Michelle seem like an antagonist when she's introduced later. So by having everything backfire spectacularly, it clarifies that Abby's attempts to woo Joel are misguided.
This whole Joel/Michelle/Abby love triangle was an extremely delicate tightrope to balance on when I first conceived it, but by making Abby a complete romantic novice who's motivated by desperation and fear, hopefully the audience will still sympathize with her, but with the hope that she'll wise up and discover what love really is.

Really good twist there getting Aaron into the scene. Go him! And really clever how you tied in his "Swiss Army" from two weeks ago, too 
And yeah, someone made the Frieda / Pepper Ann connection already, but I only just noticed myself in the last two strips here, TBH. Intentional or not, it's pretty cool nonetheless
