Winters are hard for Nineteen-Ninety-Something. They're always pop cultural dead zones - no big movies, no new TV shows, no noteworthy albums. Sometimes I kinda have to grasp a bit for stuff to make fun of. Yeah, hey, White Fang! That was...totally a movie that was out in February 1991.

But out of that lack of things to parody, I end up getting a lot of good character-driven stuff instead. I like writing for Eric 'cause he's such a naive and suggestible kid that he'll believe pretty much anything his older siblings tell him. As always, '90s culture is my jumping off point for who these characters are and what they do. It's like the characters are the engine of the strip, and pop culture parodies are the ripcord. (Man, that was a good analogy, I gotta write that one down. Oh wait, I did.)

This was a fun one. Loved it.

I have a question for you, regarding how you write 1990 Something: how much of the strip is written in the moment (as in, the actual 90's) and how much is written with the benefit of hindsight? And what's your main mindset when you make these? Do you approach writing these as a comic maker would in 1990, or do you approach them as a comic maker in 2016 looking back at the 90's? I'm just curious, because this comic (and this one in particular) wouldn't look too out of place next to Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield...minus the swearing and sexual savagery of Lindsay and her family, of course.

This is a really cool thing you've got here. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.
